Grade 6 Science

Option #1 Criteria: Hubble Telescope Slide Presentation
Do additional research and create a presentation that includes the following information.
How was the Hubble the first of its kind? Explain why it was different.
How long has the Hubble been in use and what is its main purpose?
What has the Hubble achieved since it began its work?
Also include three more pieces of information you find interesting about the Hubble and several images to use in your presentation.
Be sure to support your answers with reliable resources.

Option #2 Criteria:  Design Your Own Solar System

You are designing a solar system, and while you can choose what planets and moons are within, you must include the following information:
Choose a real galaxy and a real star in that galaxy as the center of your solar system.
Describe the location of your system in terms of light years and miles from Earth.
Design the parts of your solar system, including planets and moons but do not exceed five planets. Be sure to name them!
Describe the order of your planets, how far from the star and each other they are and how fast each orbit is.
Describe the appearance, climate, and conditions on each planet.
Draw a colored diagram of your system and optionally, you may include pictures of each planet.
Calculate how long it would take to travel to your solar system from Earth. To do this, identify the means of travel and then explain your calculation. You can use an existing transportation or an invented one.

Extreme Environment Project info and criteria:

Extreme Environments Research Project

The task:

Create a power point presentation on an extreme environment.  You may choose to focus on one particular feature of an extreme environment such as a particular desert, ocean feature, or volcano, etc.

The presentation must include:

1.  Introduction (introduce your topic – tell us some general information about your topic –one slide only)

1.  Interesting facts about the environment that you or your teacher would not know. (what has been discovered from exploring this environment?) (10 facts min.)

2. Important reasons why the environment should be explored – what can be learned or gained from exploring this environment in particular? (3 minimum)

3.  A few examples of the types of technology that are needed to explore and survive in this extreme environment.  Highlight Canadian contributions.

4.  One type of technology explained in detail (history, description, function).  For example:  the Canadarm, ROPOS, ISS, Dante II, NOMAD, Mars Rover, RADARSAT, submarines, scuba, satellite, radar, sonar, Deep Worker, Newt Suit, space shuttle, the new Dragon space rocket, etc.

Your presentation should be 10 slides minimum, plus a title slide and a bibliography slide to cite your internet and print resources.

MARKING CRITERIA:

3 X…                  5 (exceeds)    4 (fully meets)     3.5 (meets most)       3 (meets some)                                                                                                                                    2.5 (min meets)

Information:

– describe the characteristics of your EE that make it an extreme environment

– include interesting, important facts about your EE (min 10)

– list some of the technology that may be used in your EE

– provide detailed information on ONE technology specifically used in your EE

– highlight Canadian technology or focus on a particular Canadian who has been involved in exploring your EE

– give min 3 reasons for exploring your extreme environment

Presentation:
– present your power point to the class without simply reading off the slides

– you should have notes OR cue cards to accompany your oral presentation

– clear speaking, good pace, on task

Complete:

– Title slide, Intro slide, Important Facts, Reasons for Exploring, Types of Technology, One Technology in Detail, Bibliography

– Relevant interesting pictures or photographs

– Canadian contributions to exploring your EE included

– Minimum 10 slides (max 15)

HOMEWORK:  Copy and complete the table for 10 different electronic appliances:

Item that uses electricity Purpose of item What people did before electricity
